Protecting your workers from UV exposure

Five Sunsmart tips for the building site

As tradies, we have a higher risk of developing skin cancer due to greater exposure to UV radiation. Even if some of our jobs are inside, we often have lunch or prepare equipment outside.

Outdoor workers have a higher risk of developing skin cancer because they can receive up to 10 times more UV radiation exposure than indoor workers.

Damage from UV radiation exposure accumulates over time, so the more you are exposed, the greater your risk of skin cancer. Sun protection should be used all year when working outdoors.

While UVB rays, the primary cause of sunburn, are weaker in winter, UVA rays remain strong year-round and can penetrate clouds and even glass, making sunscreen essential for winter sun protection.

Have an all-year-round Sunsmart strategy.

Under the Health and Safety Work Act (HSWA) 2015, employers are responsible for ensuring that workers are not put at risk from UV radiation. SunSmart provides more information on employers’ responsibilities.

Provide Sunscreen

Supply water-resistant, broad-spectrum sunscreen of at least SPF30 on site. During breaks, could you pass it around? Also, sunscreen should be in the work vehicle glove boxes.

Hats and sunglasses

Ditch the cap for a wide-brimmed hat. While a bucket hat might be cool, it is often not wide enough to provide adequate sun protection. It is important to cover the neck from the sun. Top it off with close-fitting sunglasses.

UPF 50 your kit

Choose work gear for your team that has a UPF rating of 50+. For more information, check out Sunsmart: https://www.sunsmart.org.nz/be-sunsmart/slip-on-clothing/.

You can claim a tax deduction on sun protection items such as sunscreen and other personal protective equipment (PPE).

Lessen sun exposure

If possible, reduce the time workers spend outside in the sun by providing shade or rescheduling work tasks.

Protection from UV through windows

Sitting in a vehicle or working close to windows with direct sun can still result in significant exposure to UV radiation. Film or tint vehicle windows; use sunscreen if working inside near windows.
